The Lens

We are not trained to fix.

We are trained to see.

The person. The context. The occupation.

That collision — that holy, specific, unrepeatable collision of who someone is, what they do, where they do it, and what it costs them not to do it anymore —

That is ours. Only ours.

No other profession is trained to stand there and see all of it at once.

And you cannot learn it in an anatomy lab.

You cannot find it in a range of motion chart.

It lives somewhere between the person and the doing.

And we are the only ones trained to stand in that space.

Our models are not the decoration. They are the glasses.

And once you put them on you cannot take them off.

You will never again look at a shoulder and see only a shoulder.

You will see the shoulder and the hammer it needs to hold.

The shelf it needs to reach.

The grandchild. The guitar. The thing that makes the person feel like themselves.

That is not movement. That is meaning.

And meaning is our medicine.

You can upskill in ortho. You can upskill in mental health, in paediatrics, in hand therapy, in every corner this profession reaches.

But the lens?

In a classroom you almost tuned out. In a model that felt abstract and unnecessary until the day — the exact day — you sat across from someone and understood what they had actually lost.

Not the degrees of flexion. Not the grip strength.

The life. The ordinary, irreplaceable life.

So don’t throw away your glasses before you’ve learned to see.

The anatomy tells you what is broken. The occupation tells you what is at stake.

And we are the ones — the only ones — who never forget the difference.
