There is so much more that we can do as occupational therapy practitioners if we simply give ourselves permission. Permission to think big and permission to create new ways. In this episode we talk with Jess Leggatt, an inspiring OT from Brisbane Australia. Jess talks about what ‘occupation as medicine’ means to her, and how the power of occupation (and doing more of the things we love) can boost our well-being on a neurophysiological level.
Jess also dives into how we can be using the research on psychoneuroimmunology to explain why occupation is healing and restorative on so many levels. Jess explains the inextricable link between the mind and the body, and types of assessment and intervention approaches she uses in her work to ensure a holistic perspective. She encourages us to think beyond typical goal setting and consider asking “The Miracle Question” instead. We discuss strengths-based approaches, helping clients manifest their dream life and SO much more!
Jess is an occupational therapist and yoga-meditation teacher specialising in integrative wellness. She is also a registered mental health practitioner with over 16 years experience working in both the physical and mental health care fields in a diverse range of speciality areas. She is currently a private practitioner at a youth mental health centre, and also has her own online private practice where she combines mindfulness, yoga and occupational therapy to provide a service that focuses on the whole person for ultimate mental, physical and emotional wellbeing.
