While listening is recognised as a ‘soft skill’, I think it is anything but that. It’s hard. To deeply listen to our clients and their needs, wants, dreams and desires it takes a certain level of humility. The humility to pay attention. The humility to see life through their lens. The humility to recognise when we get it wrong. It’s also about the collision of compassion and caring. These are essential occupational therapy ingredients that can sometimes be forgotten in our rush-rush ‘get-the-job-done’ society. So, I challenge you to take a moment before you walk through the door to see your next client or patient and remind yourself the immense power you hold to help shape meaning in a persons life. And listen, deeply.
