Today we look through the lens an autistic OT; Bill Wong. Bill is a role model to the autistic community, he’s an OT inspiration and a huge advocate for our profession. Bill has presented and shared his blended perspectives on autism with communities around the globe and is the first occupational therapy practitioner to speak at 2 TED Talks.
In this episode Bill openly shares his diagnosis story, his response to his diagnosis, how he describes autism (and why we need to rethink ‘high functioning’ and ‘low functioning’ labels), the kind of language we should use as healthcare professionals (this may surprise you!!) and tips for occupational therapists working with the autistic community.
If you’re an occupational therapist working with autistic individuals, or maybe you’re even questioning why I’m using the word ‘autistic’, because hey, isn’t that word taboo?, then you will really get a lot of take-aways from this stimulating conversation.
I’m so grateful for Bill sharing his personal experiences and insights with us to help us raise the bar and better support the autistic community.
